10 Cell Phone Etiquette Tips for Date Night

Nobody wants to play second fiddle to a cell phone.

Checking your phone, taking calls or glancing at alerts during any visit is a no-go. I can’t tell you how many great conversations have come to a grinding halt over “hold on, do you mind if I respond to this”? Well, actually – I do mind. I mind very much. And guess what? Anyone who says they don’t mind is just being nice. The same consideration needs to go to your spouse. When you’re connecting – you should be completely unplugged from your technology & focused on your partner. This sounds like a no-brainer, right? Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re doing it, sacrificing our “real life” experiences for the random interloper that just barged in. The interloper can wait, stay focused and let your partner know that they are the most important part of your current moment.

Tips to keep your technology from being an interloper:

  1. If your phone is on the table, turn it over so you’re not glancing at the screen
  2. Set your phone to silent or airplane mode
  3. If there is a need to be available for a babysitter, change their ring tone so you’re only on alert for one particular number
  4. Don’t assume it’s OK to jump on Google to fact check during a conversation
  5. Don’t spend 5 minutes scrolling through photos or emails looking for something nobody cares about

When is it OK to use your phone?

  1. Taking photos of your shared experience
  2. Streaming music to enjoy together
  3. Face timing or Skyping a friend together
  4. Using apps like the calculator or flashlight if it’s helpful to what you’re doing – like tipping
  5. Accessing Passbook & other reservation items

Our grandparents have a “cell phone basket” at the front door. I thought this was so ridiculous, but it works. These tips will give you a virtual cell phone basket – use it & see the difference your undivided attention makes. What should we add to the list?
