We’ve all been there. You rush into date-night at the last second, claiming, “I’m here!”—but mentally, you’re still at work, running errands, or managing the chaos of the day. Sure, your body’s present, but is this really date-night?
Abe Lincoln famously said, “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four sharpening the axe.” While we don’t suggest spending most of your date night prepping, what if just two minutes could make the two hours ten times more meaningful?
Before you write it off as hyperbole, think about it. How do you feel when someone's in front of you but clearly not with you; their eyes and "uh-huh"s tell you they're elsewhere? Zero connection. That's your starting point, so really, being actually present is easily a 10x.
Enter the Date-Night 2-Minute Drill. Committing to just 2 minutes makes it light and approachable so we can just get started. But, even 2 minutes will make a difference in transitioning from the hustle of the day into the heart of your relationship and what you reap from date-night.
Step 1: Set Aside the Day (1 Minute)
Take a deep breath. Jot down any lingering to-dos, worries, or stray thoughts circling your mind. Capture them on the page, and come back on your timing. This quick reset shifts your focus to the present.
Step 2: Set an Intention for the Date (1 Minute)
Ask yourself:
- How do I want to show up tonight?
- What do I want my partner to feel—fun, connection, truly seen or ???
- Is there something they’ve shared/asked that I could honor tonight?
These small reflections create a clearer, more intentional path for the evening.
Why It Works
The 2-Minute Drill isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing up for yourself, your partner and your relationship with purpose. It’s a quick pivot from “just being there” to truly being present.
Your Challenge:
- Design your version of the 2-Minute Drill. What would help you transition?
- Experiment with it for three date-nights.
We’d love to hear how it goes! Did you notice a difference? Share your experience and let’s keep making those date nights even better.
